On our way back from Melbourne last week, we detoured via Kyneton so that we could go to one of our favourite cafes, Little Swallow. Unfortunately it wasn't open so we looked around for an alternative. With it's beautiful wide verandah Mr Carsisi was the obvious choice.
Now
in the interests of full disclosure I must confess that not all of the
photos in this post are mine. The shots of the food are, but the rest
are not. I do, however, have an excellent excuse. Not long after we sat
down a group of people arrived and I was surprised and slightly confused
to see that one of the guests was Paul Atterbury, who is one of my
favourite presenters from the British TV show Antiques Roadshow. If you're not sure which one Paul is you can see the pics here on the Great Eats facebook page.
It
was weird and random to us that he just happened to be in Kyneton, and
it was distracting to hear his very distinctive voice drifting across
the tables. We spent a fair amount of time debating what on earth he
would be doing in Australia, let alone the Goldfields, turns out he was
simply on holidays. So that's what threw me from my normal routine!
Anyway, back to the review.
Looking at the photo now it is such a shame that it doesn't do justice to the dish. The photo should be doing the can can or flying through the air like something from Cirque D'Soleil, but then again I guess that's unlikely.
Hubby chose the Fried Calamari, radish, pomegranate and olive salad. Plus he chose the Potatoes Moutabel as a side, those being spiced crushed potatoes with tahini yoghurt. Again the photo is inadequate because it has made the dish look too white and bland. It wasn't bland at all, it was very dynamic both in taste and texture. Mr Carsisi has a Turkish inspiration behind it. But make no mistake, this is not a Turkish restaurant, (not that there's anything wrong with that). It is a chic venue with a stimulating menu.
Daughter went for the Yemeni Hulba - warmed spiced rice with Lentil and fenugreek dip, served with flatbread. She rounded the dish off with the Shiraz Salad, which is a Persian salad of tomato, cucumber and onion with a mint and red wine dressing. It was the perfect accompaniment to the main dish with it's zingy freshness and crunch. The spiced rice was hearty and full of flavour with just the perfect amount of spicy kick to it.
We thoroughly enjoyed Mr Carsisi, everything about it was excellent, well nearly everything. Compared to the high standard of the food, the coffee was only so-so. However I accept that their focus is on great food, wine and service, and they have certainly got all that right.
Was it a Great Eat? Yes I tell you, yes!

Mr Carsisi has a warm and inviting
atmosphere that draws you in from the moment you walk through the front
door. The interior features lots of warm and stylishly combined
contemporary touches with a sort of farm house vibe. It's nicer than
your own house but you do feel at home!
Being
in Kyneton for a quick 'we're just passing through' type lunch we
skipped the entrees and went straight to mains. I had the Roasted walnut
crusted Hapuka fillet with dill mashed potatoes, broad beans, pine
nuts, tahini and garlic cream. I can't even begin to tell you how
amazing this was, it was so very, very delicious that I wanted to lick
the plate!
