A Real Treat - Bold Cafe

We had lunch at Bold Cafe last week and we were very impressed. We've been in the area for three years, however this was our first visit to Bold Cafe. Even though it looks cute and is well spoken of by locals it just never appealed to me. But now I'm left scratching my head at my own misguided judgements because it was really great!

The atmosphere inside is very relaxed and friendly and the staff have a similar demeanour.  We had a lovely table next to both a window and the little open fire. It was very sweet and pleasant. The menu is mainly vegetarian and features curry and spicy flavours. I went against that trend and chose a chicken, leek and fennel pie.

It looked appealing, although I have a pet peeve about dishes that are called a pie and yet have no pastry. Yes I understand the pot pie and also shepherd's pie concept, but actually both of those have some pastry, the pot pie has a pastry lid and she shepherd's pie has a pastry case with potato top. So I had a moment of disappointment when my pastry-less pie was placed before me, however I needn't have concerned myself as it was delicious exactly as it was and it most certainly didn't  need any pastry. It was perfection.

What I most liked about it was the fact that it tasted homemade, but better. The chicken was succulent and left to speak for itself. What I mean is that there weren't complicated flavours or the sense that the kitchen was trying too hard, to be too clever. There were just good simple, 'honest' tastes and I loved it!

Hubby had the Chilli Eggplant with tofu. As with my dish he was also impressed with  how clean the flavours were. Not a curry as such, the chilli added a nice amount of warmth to the vegetables and tofu without overpowering them, and making it all about spiciness.

We finished off with perfectly acceptable soy lattes and I took home a piece of flourless chocolate cake. I mean, if it's flourless it's practically a health food right? Which is just as well because it was amaaazing! Even hubby, who doesn't have a sweet tooth went in for a couple more spoon fulls.

Is it a Great Eat? Yes
