I find The Public Inn hit and miss. I like the atmosphere, open fire in winter and pleasantly cool in summer. I like the decor, it's modern but sort of 'woodsy' and it's comfortable and unpretentious. The food is pretty good too, although here is where it all starts to unravel for me, because unlike the decor I do find the menu pretentious, in description at least.
I admit that the food is of a high standard, really yummy in fact but it is
also a bit pricey and I suggest undeservedly so. More likely than not you'll come away feeling slightly hungry and with a big hole in your wallet. We've eaten here numerous times for a variety of different occasions from casual lunch for two to celebration family dinners and some times the food is amazing and sometimes it's good but not great.
But the biggest problem for me is the staff. There's
only one really good wait staff member and I suspect he is the owner or
manager. The rest act as if they're too fabulous to be working here. If you get the one good guy, you'll have a really great
night, everything will be perfect,
if not ...then not.
I will come
back even though it feels overpriced and the service is dodgy. It's one of the few restaurants in town, (Castlemaine) that is open on a Monday night and there's a very good chance that you'll have a great night.
The day I went to up-date my photos of The Public Inn they were closed, hence the outside shots, so why not check out their own website here and see it all for yourself.

Yes, too true. We've got family coming in from O/S to stay next month and once upon a time I would have taken them there, but I think I'll pass and go to The Good Table instead. And The Roo in Maldon.
