Husband and I had dinner at The Railway Hotel last week.
This is a great pub and if you get the chance to go there, do! It’s got that wonderful country pub feel to it. Unfortunately for me that ‘out in the country’ vibe
has worn off. I remember going there for the first time and it definitely had
that feel, but now it just feels normal. However I have taken lots of family
and friends there over the years and they confirm that it very much feels like
a quintessential country pub.
With one exception – the food is awesome! Lots of
love goes into the making of their dishes. The ingredients seem fresh and high
quality and the servings are generous. They do little things like using milk
and cream in their mashed potatoes. Now I know that there’s nothing ground
breaking about that, but in a pub where the prices are already quite reasonable
it’s lovely that the kitchen is free to go the extra mile and are not hamstrung
by budget restrictions. As a result pretty much everything we’ve ever eaten
there has been delicious and the menu is well crafted. There are all the usual ‘pubby’
things such as steaks, (always cooked really nicely) and schnitzel variations
but they also have great curries on the specials board and their regular menu
changes …well, regularly!
There’s lots of cute and cozy corners to snuggle into
as well as the open fire in winter.
The front bar adds a lot of atmosphere
without being rowdy or distracting, plus there’s a pool table in there so it’s
a great spot to retire to after your meal, along with a night cap of course!
Is it a Great Eat? It certainly used to be, now I'm not sure. I'll have to go back!
