When most people are asked where's good to eat in Castlemaine, they tend to say "Saffs". It's the go-to place, but I don't get it. I don't get the attraction to Saffs. The coffee is woeful, the food is average and the so called atmosphere is whatevsy. Hit and miss. I mean, I wouldn't write it off, as in summertime it is quite nice to sit out on the street and watch the comings and goings. And out the back is lovely as well, although very cold in winter as there is no heater. Plus sitting out the back is a gamble because if it's busy inside you WILL be forgotten. We once sat outside for fifteen minutes and finally we just left, walked back through the restaurant past a number of staff who said nothing, out the front door and off to a different cafe. Because it is local we have eaten here many, many times but that is only because of the lack of options. Dovetons down the road is waaay better and for a nicer meal go to The Good Table, although the night we ate there the after dinner coffee was totally undrinkable. It's quite hard to get a consistently good coffee in Castlemaine, particularly as we drink soy lattes! I don't order coffee from Saffs anymore, just food. Go to The Dispensary in Bendigo if you want 'proper' coffee.
