The Harcourt Tavern

This is a great pub to go to for the classic 'cheap and cheery'. Do you know what I mean? Very cheerful friendly service and yummy, home-style meals at sensible prices. We ate there last night and I had a very tender lamb roast with stacks of fresh and simple veggies, which is the way I like them.

They even do brussel sprouts!
I chose a 2012 Pinot from Bress Winery which was delicious!

Husband had a Chicken Tex Mex, with chips and salad. Again it was all very fresh and tasty in a home cooked meal kind of way.

He enjoyed his meal with a local cider "2 Pear" which I believe is from Henry's of Harcourt. I foolishly didn't write the details down, and I can't make it out in the photo. Oops.

The Tav, (as we like to call it), is a great family pub. With hearty meals and an open fire, you really can't go wrong.

The Cosmopolitan Hotel

Last weekend we were treated to some seriously great eats courtesy of The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Trentham. We headed over there as part of the Harvest Week Festival, which was wrapping up that weekend. There were a few little eateries in charming Trentham, but the sight of the smoke curling up from the chimney at The Cosmopolitan was the deal breaker.

great atmosphere inside
I ordered the "Daylesford Macedon Produce Harvest Week Regional Tasting Plate, with matching glass of wine", yes that's honestly what it was called!

Husband went for the Southern Style Chicken Wings and a very unusual beer called 3 Ravens Dark Smoke Beer, which did indeed  have a smokey element to it. A bit like Guinness but lighter, so, more drinkable. That is a beer well worth checking out if you haven't already.

unique beers and excellent service

My tasting plate was amazing. Every component was spot on. Little roasted quail, and the quail came from Harcourt. I did not know there was a quail farm out here, I'll have to check that out. Potato blinis made from Trentham potatoes, (of course), and served with house smoked salmon. Plus a darling little "mushrooms on toast". Seems a bit pedestrian to call it that, but those are their words not mine! I actually strongly dislike mushrooms and my heart sank when I saw them, but I tried them and they were delicious! I was later told they were picked from the Trentham Golf Course that morning. So it turns out I do like fresh, sporty mushrooms. The platter was rounded off with a glass of Curly Flat Chardonay, from nearby Lancefield. It was so delectable! I often times find white wine a bit thin and sort of acidic. I way prefer red wine as a rule. But this wine was like velvet, full bodied velvet wine. Okay that makes no sense but I'm sensing you get my meaning.

It was incredibly pleasant sitting by the fire enjoying fine food and excellent wine. It was pretty much the perfect 'Sunday afternoon in a country pub' experience. It's a relaxed atmosphere at The Cosmopolitan. You can wander in for a meal, a coffee, a beer what ever takes your fancy.

Was It A Great Eat? Well and truly!
